Look at the back of one of your products you and your family use. See that long list of ingredients on the back of that bottle? Some aren’t probably as safe as you’d hope. In fact, 80% of the chemicals in personal care products have never been tested for safety. That’s troubling since our skin – the largest organ in our bodies is staring disaster straight in the face.
In a recent study, common cosmetic preservatives known as parabens were found in biopsies of breast cancer tumors that measured levels similar to their concentrations used in personal care products. We already know that chemicals are linked to many health problems such as cancer, learning disabilities, and infertility, all of which happen to be on the rise now. This fact is alarming, but not surprising given all the toxins running rampant in our physical environment. It’s time we became more safe and savvy consumers and put toxic circulation to rest.
If chemicals are disguising themselves in our cosmetics, cleaning agents, and even our food supply, it is wise to make a habit out of checking the ingredients label. Also, be wary of marketing tactics. The use of popular jargon such as natural, pure, green, hypoallergenic, and botanical are unregulated terms and don’t mean a thing. Even if a product includes some organic ingredients, there’s no guarantee that they’re not packaged with a toxic preservative. Another proactive practice to adopt is to steer clear from any ingredients you have trouble recognizing or pronouncing. The general rule of thumb is if you can’t read it, then you don’t need it.
Another handy solution is to check out EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for the top 5 essential tips and facts. Here’s what I love about this site, it runs a search on more than 65,000 products and helps us to make informed decisions when purchasing a product. This search engine rates your product using a 0-10 grading scale, depending on the level of hazard to your health and the environment. Just recently an app was launched, which conveniently operates on a scanning barcode system and ranks products on a numerical scale with 1s and 2s being the cleanest. It doesn’t get more convenient than that! As for all other products that go beyond beautifying, The EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning provides everything else you would need to know in order safeguard your home from toxic invasion. This intelligent database uses a standard alphabetical grading system to rate the level of hazardousness. And be sure to stay abreast to product reviews to ensure your home is chemical-free.
If we continue to support shady companies by consuming their products, there will be no cause for change. We can’t control everything that goes beyond our realm of reach, but we do however, have control over the products we bring into our homes and put on our bodies. By shopping smart we can vote with our wallets and encourage a positive shift toward a greener and cleaner market and thus environment. You can become a more health-conscious consumer by learning the myths on product safety and hopefully someday we won’t have to read any more labels. Lets promote change for the greater good and improve the quality of life for our future generations.
