Halloween is just around the corner and with all that candy floating around this time of year I thought I’d share a healthier alternative to this traditional candy-centered holiday.
Alternatively, swap that treat bag for a tangerine-made pumpkin. Equally as festive, easily substituted, and arguably much better for you. A small fruit such as a tangerine, clementine, or orange can be made to resemble a small pumpkin in just one easy step: by adding a green pipe cleaner. Simply, peel your tangerine and insert one green pipe cleaner (trimmed to your desired length). Serve your mini pumpkins on a silver platter as a healthier go-to option for your health-conscious guests or for your young trick-or-treaters.
It may not be as flashy, but the silver lining (or wrapper, I should say) is that it offers more nutrition and less tummy-ache than the conventional Halloween snack. With no added refined sugars, artificial additives, preservatives, and dyes, this “sweet” option is sure to please during these upcoming Halloween celebrations.
I had to use an orange (as seen in picture), since this was the only organic option available at the time. I do, however, recommend a tangerine or clementine for an easier peel. To make do with what I had I decided to cut the orange into wedges and reassemble them into their original form to create the appearance of a mini pumpkin. As a great snack-on-the-go, tie an elastic around the pre-cut wedges for a long-lasting freshness and great taste.
