The holidays are a time of enjoyment and sometimes over indulgence, so I decided to kick-off the new year with a winter detox! A little post-holiday detoxification allows us to reenergize our bodies, normalize our food consumption, and reboot our health. Following a time of abundance and gluttony, a detox is necessary to reset and recharge our body for a new year. In general, we don’t have to wait for summer to look and feel our best. With just a little TLC and a yummy smoothie every now and then, we can feel awesome all year round.
Pure fruit and vegetable smoothies are one of the most convenient ways to rid your body of toxins. They’re tasty, they are simple to make, affordable. and they’ll have you feeling great fast!
This smoothie recipe in particular is not only effective at flushing out toxins from the body, it is also antioxidant-rich and can help prevent serious illnesses like heart disease and cancer. The powerful combination of pomegranates and blueberries work together to fight free-radicals and is also anti-inflammatory. Adding an apple helps remove toxins from the body due to its alkalinity, which acts to neutralize the acid in our bodies in order to absorb nutrients better. Kale is a vital vegetable because it contains high amounts of iron, calcium, and fiber. The benefits of apple and this leafy green superfood help to cleanse the body by aiding liver function. The combination of lemon, which is high in vitamin C makes plant-based iron, abundant in kale- highly absorbable in the body. All hail to kale! Lemon is also a natural energizer, it hydrates and oxygenates the blood so the body feels revitalized and refreshed by flushing unwanted waste.
Here is a simple recipe to help get you the best results on your winter detox and get you feeling ready for what the new year may bring:
3/4 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup pure pomegranate juice (I prefer Lakewood Organic Pure Pomegranate juice)
2 large kale leaves
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled
1/2 lemon (remove peel)
Cut kale and apple into small pieces. Add everything into a blender and mix until liquified. Feel free to add ice for less of a liquidly consistency, or water to dilute. Serve immediately.
